Abstract

In Europe and North America T-cell leukaemias and lymphomas are uncommon compared with tumours of B-lymphocytes although this disparity is probably exaggerated by under-recognition. Some neoplasms of T-lymphocytes have been reasonably well defined clinically and histologically. These are T-lymphoblastic lymphoma, a tumour of precursor T-cells that is dealt with in Chapter 10, chronic lymphocytic leukaemia of T-cell type and the cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (mycosis fungoides and Sezary’s syndrome). Numerous histological subtypes of node-based T-cell lymphomas have been reported in recent years. The small numbers of cases in individual series makes it difficult at the present time to determine the relationship of these subgroups to each other and to the normal maturation sequence of T-lymphocytes. Knowles and Halper (1982) have shown that tumours of the same immunological phenotype may display diverse histopathological features.
