Abstract
Using morphological criteria alone Jaffe et al. (1982) were able to predict the correct phenotype in only 61% of diffuse large cell lymphomas. These tumours previously designated as reticulum cell sarcomas, were termed histiocytic lymphomas in the Rappaport classification in the belief that they were derived from cells of the monocyte/macrophage system (Rappaport, 1966). Immunological and cytochemical marker studies (Table 11.1) have shown that the majority of these tumours are, in fact, of B-cell origin and that true histiocytic lymphomas are uncommon. Lukes et al. (1978) found only one histiocytic lymphoma amongst 425 cases submitted to multiparameter analysis and the category ‘histiocytic lymphoma’ does not appear at all in the Kiel classification.
