T cell phenotyping in the diagnosis and management of AIDS and AIDS related disease

  • Chapter
Blood, Blood Products — and AIDS —

Abstract

The topic of this chapter is the utility, if any, of T lymphocyte subset quantitation in the assessment and management of patients infected with human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV). The answer to this question cannot be definitive at this time because of the novelty of this epidemic and the nature of the data. The perceptions of practising physicians on T cell phenotyping have far-reaching consequences for the well-being of their patients, on laboratory services utilization and on health care expenditures. Additional studies are needed to address the utility of T lymphocyte testing. Clinical practitioners, faced with an incompletely resolved medical issue, must continue to critically assess the relevance of this test to decision-making in patients with HIV infection.
