Effects of HIV infection on the immune system

  • Chapter
Book cover Blood, Blood Products — and AIDS —

Abstract

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is characterized by progressive lymphopenia, predominantly of T helper/inducer cells, which renders the patient susceptible to a variety of opportunistic infections and malignancies. AIDS itself remains a clinical diagnosis and is but one manifestation of a spectrum of clinical and subclinical immunologic disorders caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), also known as HTLV-III, LAV, or ARV (Barré-Sinoussi et al., 1983; Gallo et al., 1984; Levy et al., 1984; Coffin et al, 1986).
