Abstract
The care of patients with malignant fungating breast lesions poses an enormous challenge for nurses and the problem faced by the patients is often extreme. Doyle (1980) graphically describes what these patients may experience:
Can we begin to imagine what it must feel like for a patient to see part of his/her body rotting and to have to live with the offensive smell from it, see the reaction of his visitors (including doctors and nurses) and to know that it signifies lingering death?
