Abstract
Although there is an accelerating move away from hospital continuing care units towards ‘home’ or domestic-style accommodation in public and private nursing homes, patients are still not in their own homes. They are in care because they need the skills of the staff and their resources. In order to get that care they have to accept the status of ‘patients’. Even those who appreciate the help they are given would rather be elsewhere. Some may not be convinced that they need care at all.
