Abstract
A substantial part of this section is devoted to the investigative process because, although most health professionals will never have a role that is central to a detailed investigation, it is useful for them to know how suspected cases are managed. Enhanced understanding of the processes should ensure that they give appropriate information to those more directly involved and will equip them to provide support and help to anyone, patient or colleague, who may be depending on them.
