Abstract

The experiments described in this chapter are a few of those which have been found by the authors to be useful in teaching the fundamental techniques of chromatography to undergraduate students, and to members of short courses in Practical Chromatography. The experiments have been chosen to give an example of each of the main procedures, and all have been found to work well in the hands of the inexperienced. No particular originality is claimed, although it is not always possible to quote original sources, because several published methods may have been blended, and then further adapted, by the present authors or their colleagues. In many cases the experiments are designed for use with a particular material or apparatus, often merely because that happened to be available. It is usually not difficult to modify the methods so that other similar equipment can be used. All the experimental figures quoted have been determined by the authors (or their students) for the conditions described. This includes the Rf values for paper and thin-layer experiments, which show some slight differences from the figures published elsewhere.
