Abstract

Chromatographic columns in which the moving phase is a liquid were described in Chapter 2; columns where the moving phase is a gas such as nitrogen or hydrogen will now be considered. Adsorption and partition systems are possible; the respective techniques are known as gas-solid chromatography (GSC) and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). In gas-solid chromatography the column is packed with an adsorbent such as silica gel and the components of the mixture distribute themselves between the gas phase and the adsorbed phase, that is, on the surface of the solid. Separation is due to differences in adsorptive behaviour. In gas-liquid chromatography the column is packed with a porous solid coated with a thin layer of involatile liquid as the stationary phase. Separation is due to differences in solution behaviour. Components of the mixture distribute themselves between the gas phase and the stationary liquid phase according to their partition coefficients. The solid functions only as a support for the liquid stationary phase, enabling it to present a large surface to the gas.
