Abstract
Radiological investigations over the years have generally been introduced with very little evaluation of either the diagnostic performance or the influence they have on patient management. This deficiency has become particularly important over the last two decades as major new diagnostic technologies, including magnetic resonance, computed tomography, ultrasound and nuclear medicine have been introduced into clinical medicine. The Council on Science and Society report in 1983 noted the haphazard manner in which expensive technologies were introduced and also that assessment is considered with very little concern for patient reactions or to the social and psychological consequences. Although the overriding reason for an evaluation is to confirm a positive benefit in patient care there are other practical reasons for increasing effort in this area.
