Abstract
The adequate management of any malignancy depends on several factors. The first is an accurate diagnosis. For the diagnosis to be accurate, not only must the site of the tumour be identified, but the exact tissue in which the tumour is arising must be determined. Although the histogenic type of the tumour may be readily apparent on light microscopy, more detailed investigations including histochemical techniques of resected tumour are often necessary to correctly characterize the malignancy in terms of tissue origin and degree of differentiation of the tumour. A further factor in contributing to decisions on management is the stage of the malignancy at the time of presentation or at the time of investigation.
