Abstract

Impotence, an inability to achieve or maintain an erection suitable for sexual intercourse, is a common male ailment with a reported incidence of 25% at 65 years of age [1]. Erectile dysfunction may be caused by psychogenic, endocrine, neurological, pharmacological or vascular factors. Contrary to the long-held belief, it has now been established that only a small proportion (about one-quarter) of the subjects have purely functional impotence; further, the majority (over 85%) of patients with organic impotence have a vasculogenic aetiology [2].
