Abstract

Much has been written about pulmonary embolism in the medical and surgical literature. Despite this interest in pulmonary embolism, the scientific basis for our beliefs about the condition is quite weak. In this section, mostly conventional ideas about pulmonary embolism will be discussed; however, readers are encouraged to develop a healthy scepticism about what we think we know about pulmonary embolism.
