Abstract

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are common; about half a million people attend a clinic for STDs each year in the UK. They may affect anyone who is sexually active and are not confined to any particular group in society, although they are more common in large urban populations, because of the relative anonymity and opportunities for partner change. The mean age of female STD clinic attenders is about 24 years, with most being between 15 and 35 years.
