Abstract
Since there is a vast array of agents and conditions which can be associated with a peripheral neuropathy, extensive investigation is often advised in patients with this condition in an attempt to elicit the underlying cause. Such a wholesale approach to investigation can be partly avoided by better classification, on electrophysiological grounds, of the neuropathic process, and indeed the logic of comprehensive investigation can be questioned on the grounds of its likely success and consequent benefit to the patient.
