Abstract
Evacuation of the contents of a uterus of up to 10 weeks size may be required to resolve an incomplete spontaneous abortion, to perform a legal abortion, or to deal with a missed abortion. The manoeuvres employed are surgical in nature and the only drug required to act on the uterus is ergometrine, to secure haemostasis and perhaps to assist expulsion of debris from the uterine cavity. An alternative agent is methylergometrine.
