Abstract
The safe period (also known as the rhythm method or periodic abstinence) is approved by Roman Catholics as the only acceptable method of controlling the size of the family. In order to use this method effectively it is necessary to estimate as accurately as possible when ovulation is likely to occur and avoid intercourse during this time. This is not the safest method of birth control because irregularities in the menstrual cycle occur in most women making calculation of ovulation inaccurate. If it is the couple’s inclination to use this method, then every encouragement should be given to help them in assessing the safe period as accurately as possible: in this way many pregnancies will be avoided.
