Abstract
It is commonly suggested that the liking for selected sensory qualities and food types may be heightened in overweight and obese individuals, and that this may be a factor contributing to or sustaining excessive energy intakes. Historically, almost all of this research has been directed toward sweet taste preferences, as a result of supposed associations between sweet foods, sugar intake, and overeating, but more recent work has focused on fats. Research examining preferences and choices have applied a wide range of methods, with a variety of different possible outcome measures (Table 6.1).
