Anaesthesia and Analgesia

Abstract

Most gynaecological endoscopic procedures are of short duration, and so the anaesthetic techniques required are relatively simple. Nevertheless, these operations must be performed in a theatre which is fully equipped to deal with complications, both surgical and anaesthetic, as they occur. Some endoscopic techniques can be performed under local or regional anaesthesia, but in these cases the surgeon must bear in mind not only the possible surgical complications but also the toxicity of the analgesic and the dangers of accidental intravenous injection. An anaesthetist should always be available in the theatre in case of pain or complications requiring resuscitation or laparotomy.
