Haematological problems

  • Chapter
Handbook of Intensive Care

Abstract

Many conditions described elsewhere in this book are complicated by diffuse intravascular coagulation (DIC). It is necessary therefore to give a short account of this condition and its treatment. The term ‘diffuse intravascular coagulation’ indicates clearly the thrombotic element but the cardinal feature of the syndrome is the paradoxical situation of thrombosis and bleeding occuring simultaneously. Other terms employed for this condition include ‘consumption coagulopathy’ and ‘defibrination syndrome’. Its manifestation in clinical practice is an acutely acquired bleeding diathesis.
