Abstract
Women attending gynaecological clinics experience particularly high rates of psychological distress and psychiatric morbidity (Ballinger, 1977; Worsley, Walters and Wood, 1977; Byrne, 1984). Such high levels of psychological distress may be understood in terms of the generally higher prevalence rates of distress in women (Briscoe, 1982), together with the finding that people seeking medical help have been shown to suffer from a considerable degree of emotional distress (Moffic and Paykel, 1975).
