Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a disease that has a bearing upon almost all areas of psychological functioning, from cognitive development, schooling and family life when young, to mood and interpersonal relationships when adult. The management regimen requires lifelong self-regulation of behaviour, and the degree of control a patient achieves over the disease is affected by stress, attitudes, social support, the manner in which health care is delivered, and the expertise and beliefs of care professionals. Some patients will develop serious degenerative complications and will benefit from counselling. In short, the problems posed by the disease and its management encompass almost every area of health psychology.
