Abstract

Since psychiatric practices have historically developed in a predominantly Western cultural framework, largely through the leadership of white, middle-class males, we need to recognize the very strong social pressures and political issues that will impinge on all people involved, users and practitioners (Fernando, 1988). The emergence of multiracial and multicultural communities and the recognition of the need to accept greater gender equality mean that a range of hitherto neglected sociocultural considerations will now affect the development of individual relationships. Innate, conscious or subconscious racist and sexist values only serve to diminish the quality of such a working relationship.
