Abstract
The order Diptera, of two-winged flies, is of prime importance in medical entomology, containing as it does bloodsucking forms, disease vectors and various nuisances. It is a large and successful insect group divided into three suborders at different evolutionary levels: Nematocera, Brachycera and Cyclorrhapha. The first appears as fossils in the Permian while the other more advanced groups do not appear till the early Tertiary.
