Abstract

Everyone has a definition for quality for it is a word attached to just about every aspect of nursing. This chapter is concerned with definitions of quality and ways in which quality initiatives may be applied within the A and E department. A theme running through the chapter is that of perceptions in relation to quality. Previous experience or prior expectations may influence the ways in which staff and patients view quality. This may result in different expectations and understandings of the service as provided by A and E staff and used by patients, their families and friends.
