Abstract
The management function of controlling refers to the means whereby an organization can know the direction in which it is heading and whether its objectives are being attained. This part of the system is closely interlinked with the other management functions of planning, organizing, and coordinating. As a result, various topics related to control measures have already been considered in this book — job descriptions (Chapter 1), standards of practice (Chapter 3), and organizational charts (Chapter 7). Controlling the financial side of management will be discussed in Chapter 11. The other aspects of the management function of controlling which will be discussed in this chapter are as follows:
-
1.
Policies and procedures;
-
2.
Measures used to determine quality of care;
-
3.
Other initiatives on measuring outcomes of health services.
