Abstract

We are currently passing through a phase of rapid growth in the science and technology of medicine generally, and rheumatology in particular. The ‘established’ facts of yesterday’s practice have today become critically challenged and tomorrow will perhaps be replaced. One purpose of this chapter is to outline a few prominent areas of development in the treatment and management of rheumatic diseases and, where this is possible, to look into the future. Many of the topics discussed had barely reached medical attention when this book was started 3 years ago, some have arisen since, and doubtless more will be reported during the process of publication. Finally, an overall summary will be given.
