Abstract

In the early days of nuclear medicine, thyroid imaging and uptake used to constitute the main workload of most nuclear medicine departments. They are now well-established tests for evaluating many thyroid diseases, such as goitres, nodules, substernal masses and hyperthyroidism. 99Tcm-pertechnetate can be used intravenously and the image obtained within 30 min following injection. The uptake of 99Tcm by the thyroid gland can be quantitated easily and provides additional valuable information.
