Abstract
Multiple sclerosis (MS) affects people emotionally as well as physically. Existing difficulties with relationships, social functioning and thinking or feeling may be exacerbated by the MS. Even before MS causes practical problems it can cause enormous emotional turmoil. Segal (1986) and Robinson (1988) have described some of these reactions. As Grant et al. have shown (1989), many people diagnosed with MS have suffered severe disturbances in their lives in the months previous to onset of symptoms. How people react to these difficulties can be of vital importance for their whole lives.
