Taking up the challenge: the future for therapeutic nursing

  • Chapter
Nursing as Therapy

Abstract

The preceding chapters have all, in some way, attempted to both define, explore and develop the concept of therapeutic nursing, and to describe pragmatically its performance in action. The purpose of this final chapter is somehow to bring all of this together and to outline some pointers for the future. The task is both daunting and exciting, for the future is something about which we dream, but not something which we can accurately predict. This chapter will set out some basic assumptions about therapeutic nursing; historically review the evolution of nursing as therapy; outline arguments which suggest that the therapeutic potential of nursing has been devalued and offer suggestions for the development of nursing as a therapeutic activity for the future.
