Abstract

In the elbow joint the main articulation is between the humerus and ulna, at which flexion and extension occur. The radius articulates with the humerus only in flexion. Within the single joint capsule is a separate pivot joint, the proximal radio-ulnar joint. This functions with the distal radio-ulnar joint at the wrist to rotate the forearm. When the elbow is fully extended with the palm facing anteriorly, the forearm is slightly abducted on the humerus, giving rise to the carrying angle.
