Abstract
Occasionally, the diagnosis of oesophageal atresia may be suspected before birth, but in the vast majority the diagnosis cannot be made with certainty until after birth. In patients with oesophageal atresia it is necessary first to demonstrate complete oesophageal obstruction. Once this has been done the type of anomaly and the presence of other major anomalies must be determined. Associated congenital anomalies are found in approximately 50% of babies with oesophageal atresia and their recognition is important in deciding treatment priorities (Chapter 14).
