Oesophageal complications

  • Chapter
Oesophageal Atresia

Abstract

Mortality in oesophageal atresia has declined to the point now where death is expected only in those who have severe associated anomalies (Chapter 24). Consequently, reduction of morbidity and improvement in the quality of life have become the principal aims of therapy. Much of the morbidity of oesophageal atresia relates to complications of the oesophageal anastomosis, such as anastomotic leak, stricture formation and recurrent tracheo-oesophageal fistula (Figure 21.1); these complications of repaired oesophageal atresia are discussed in this chapter.
