Incremental methods of sedimentation size analysis

Particle Size Measurement

Part of the book series: Powder Technology Series ((PTS))

Abstract

The particle size distribution of a fine powder may be determined by examining a sedimenting suspension of the powder. The powder may be introduced as a thin layer on top of a column of clear liquid, the two-layer technique; or it may be uniformly dispersed in the liquid, the homogeneous suspension technique. In the incremental method of size analysis by sedimentation, changes with time in the concentration or density of the suspension at known depths are determined and from these the size distribution may be found. In the cumulative method, the rate at which the powder is settling out of suspension is determined and, from a knowledge of this, the size distribution may be found. Incremental methods may be divided into fixed time and fixed depth methods, the latter being more popular, although a combination is sometimes used.
