Abstract
The image of the computer as a ‘number cruncher’ becomes less and less true every year. Today’s computers are increasingly used as controllers, communicators and, above all, repositories of information. This information is held for long-term storage on backing-store devices such as magnetic discs or tapes in the form of files.
