Abstract

The bronchial tree transmits air at a rate which depends primarily on the overall diameter of the tubes through which the air is passed. The fundamental characteristic of asthma is the tendency for the airways to narrow and widen either spontaneously as a reflection of the disease process or as a result of intervention with smooth muscle relaxing and anti-inflammatory drugs.

Shall man into the mystery of breath From his quick beating pulse a pathway spy? George Meredith, Hymn to Colour
