Abstract
It is now generally accepted that the first event to occur when a virus particle enters a susceptible cell is the release of the nucleic acid or, in other words, the protein coat is stripped off the particle. This probably takes place by a stepwise removal of the protein subunits since this is what happens in the degradation of TMV in alkaline solutions.
