Abstract

The regulation of body weight is dependent upon a balance between nutrient intake and utilization, though there are other important factors (Figure 10.1).

• Body weight and composition is a balance between nutrient intake and energy utilization.

• Apoptosis is the removal of old, damaged or abnormal cells.

• Energy balance is between ‘energy consumed’ and ‘energy expended + change in body energy stores’.

• Important energy stores are glycogen (short-term) and lipids (long-term).

• Lipid stores include triglycerides whose metabolism is controlled by hormones.

• Brown adipose fat is involved in thermogenesis and energy regulation, particularly in infants.
