Abstract

The elders of ethnic minorities face a potential triple jeopardy: at risk through old age, through discrimination and through lack of access to health and social services (Norman, 1985). Traditionally, Britain has accepted a variety of ethnic minority groups within its population, so that many different races and cultures are represented in the UK elderly population profile (Table 3.1). In some inner city areas the so-called ethnic minorities are in fact the majority and the number of their elderly is increasing through ageing of the established and the arrival of dependants. In order to provide appropriate care we need to be aware of the background and special health problems and requirements of the ethnic minority groups within the UK population.
