Abstract
The generally considered ‘core’ services for assessment and rehabilitation of older people have been described. There are also a number of other services which play an important role in certain circumstances. An understanding of the criteria for referral and their timely contribution will enable the core team to provide a truly comprehensive and effective rehabilitation service. Examples such as nutrition, dentistry, pharmacy, continence, hearing and optical services are described, and local developments may offer an even wider range. As will be seen from these contributions, the linkages and overlaps are considerable — but often overlooked. Good lateral working relationships between all members of the team will do much to facilitate a smooth and timely rehabilitation process. Smaller departments having episodic contact with the core team may feel isolated and excluded from its work and social activities, and opportunities for involvement should be actively pursued — and responded to.
