Abstract
Although the title for this chapter is straightforward enough it covers this and several related matters. The first section explores the principles of tests for assessing your subjects and assembling your observations. These are grouped under the heading of ‘tools of enquiry’ and range from standardized tests through checklists to health-related functional tests. This is followed by a discussion on the use of pilot studies which are used for checking all aspects of your research design for feasibility. I emphasize the importance of adjusting your questionnaire, or other measurement tool, if there are any difficulties with these. After pointing out some of the problems that can arise and giving some general advice, the chapter ends with a section on coding the data you have collected in preparation for their analysis.
