Non-seclusion policies

  • Chapter
Seclusion and Mental Health

Abstract

There can be little doubt that initiatives in the field of mental health care are geared towards reducing the use of seclusion and eradicating it wherever possible. Even those who remain loyal to the belief that seclusion can be a therapeutic intervention advocate the reduction of its use, and that it should be used in extreme cases only. This is seen in much of the literature on seclusion, particularly those articles that reflect the personal views of those calling for its elimination. From those who attempt to defend its use there is always an air of anger and bitterness.
