Abstract

This chapter seeks to develop the knowledge and understanding of transcultural issues gained so far, and to address them within the framework of care provided by the nursing process. It is a continuation of the teaching package, and contains material that can be used either towards the end of the foundation course or during the branch programme. The chapter is structured as follows:

  • The issues involved in assessing in the transcultural domain are discussed. Assessment is focused on facilitating personal contact between students and members of local communities in order to learn about values, customs, and beliefs.

  • Planning, including examples of care plans that incorporate the principles of transcultural care, is explored.

  • Issues involved in evaluating care are described.
