Abstract

The number of new biflavonoids discovered during the last five years is not very large. However, many of them exhibit new structural features. The structures of a few amentoflavone O-glycosides have been established and the first biflavone C-glycoside has been found. The first two examples of flavone-isoflavone dimers have been isolated; among the luteolin-based dimers two new types of interflavonyl bridgeheads have been discovered, namely the ortho- and para-positions of the 3′-hydroxyl. These few highlights demonstrate clearly that the field is still expanding. The list of known biflavonoids in Table 4.1 is arranged as in Geiger and Quinn, (1982). The numbering system of the compounds is as follows: the first numeral refers to the type of interflavonyl link, the letter refers to the type of flavonoid moiety (A = biflavones, B = flavanone-flavone, C = biflavanone and D, E, F = others) and the last numeral refers to the individual compound in each group. The names are again those given to them by the authors.
