Abstract

The physician of the 1980s has a vast therapeutic armamentarium at his disposal with which to treat his patient. While in some countries, e. g. Germany, the number of preparations may exceed 10 000, in the UK some 3000 preparations are listed in the monthly index of medical supplies (MIMS). There are perhaps 1000 pharmacologically active drugs available for prescription and the potential pairs of drugs that might interact is therefore about 500 000. Patients admitted to hospital on average receive 4 or 5 drugs during the course of a hospital admission, and one in every five patients receives at least ten drugs (Crooks and Moir, 1974). There is little doubt that in the last ten years the exposure of patients to drugs has increased and this applies to both hospital and general practice.
