Abstract

There is a wide divergence between the prevalence of rheumatic diseases seen in hospital practice and those for which antirheumatic medication is prescribed in the community (Fig. 10.1). In a rheumatism clinic inflammatory joint disease predominates. In general practice degenerative conditions are far commoner. In a recent analysis of side effects of indoprofen in general practice I surveyed the types of arthritis for which it was prescribed in Leeds. Of 427 patients only 10% had inflammatory arthritis.
