Abstract
Community care for the mentally disordered offender is a relatively new concept. Ever since 1482, when it was first established in English common law that it was lawful to incarcerate a dangerous lunatic, either in his own home, or in the local Bridewell, successive government policies and consequent legislation have promoted a custodial approach to this group. It is only in recent years that the inadequacies of custodial institutions, coupled with the drive towards community care policies in general, have brought mentally disordered offenders into consideration as potential recipients of this type of service delivery.
