Abstract
The state of arousal, that is, a widespread activation of the Central Nervous System function, is induced by a variety of drugs through the modulation of different neurotransmitters. Among these, it has been widely demonstrated that the catecholamines norepinephrine (NE) and dopamine (DA) are involved in the generation of EEG and behavioral arousal (Monti, 1982; Koella, 1984). There is no doubt that the two neurotransmitters subserve different physiological and behavioral roles, even though their differential function is still a matter of debate. NE is directly involved in the ascending neural pathways which regulate and control EEG activity and waking states. In addition, evidence suggests that NE plays a role in the control of REM and waking states (Koella, 1984). On the contrary, little is known on the role of striatal, mesocortical and mesolimbic DA-containing pathways in the regulation of EEG activity related to behavioral arousal.
