Abstract
Nonlinear parametric interaction of four fields is closely related to such interesting phenomena as frequency tripling [1, 2], modulation of the refractive index by a strong field [3, 4], Raman scattering of light [1, 2], small-angle “scattering of light by light” [5], etc. Veduta and Kirsanov [6] have investigated theoretically and experimentally (special cases) the parametric conversion of two quanta ħω1, ħω2 into two other quanta ħω3, ħω4 in a transparent nonlinear medium. Kirsanov and Selivanenko [7] have studied such parametric conversion under resonance conditions [7]. The parametric interaction of four waves is particularly effective when the spatial and time phase-matching conditions are satisfied.
A theoretical investigation is made of the four-field nonlinear mirror effect, in which a nonlinear medium exhibits frequency-selective reflection of some waves in the presence of other waves. Various mechanisms of such selection are considered and it is shown that the reflection coefficient of a nonlinear mirror may reach 100% A study is made also of mechanisms of the four-field parametric frequency selection within wide stimulated emission lines. The possibility of observation of the effects in question is discussed and their practical applications are considered.
