Abstract
My story began with the discovery of sulfanilamide—the fourth useful chemotherapeutic agent the world had known, Morris Fishbein in the Boston Herald of December 31, 1939, described the three previous specific remedies as: “quinine for malaria, arsphenamine for syphilis and diphtheria antitoxin. Sulfanilamide entered this “hall of fame” by acting as a specific for a strain of the streptococcus germ.” It was important for its therapeutic effects but perhaps more important for the development of the antimetabolite theory.
